This genus has a native range from northwestern Europe through the Mediterranean. It includes a species which is commonly cultivated for its edible roots, Conopodium majus, or the Kippernut.

Conopodium Species and Varietals

The genus Conopodium is a member of the plant family Apiaceae, and includes eight species.

Conopodium majus (Kippernut, Cipernut, Arnut, Jarnut, Hawknut, Earth Chestnut, Groundnut, Earthnut, Pignut, Hognut, Saint Anthony's Nut)
These plants produce smooth, slender stems up to 16 inches tall, and have very divided foliage. Leaves are green, and flowers are very small and white, blooming in compound umbels. The tuber root of this plant is cultivated and harvested, similar to a Chestnut in color and size. Flavor of the tuber is similar to a mix between Hazelnut, Sweet Potato, Chestnut, and Brazil Nut.
