Taraxacum albidum This species, native to southern Japan, forms a perennial herbaceous plant that produces white flowers with yellow-cream colored centers. Leaves are deeply lobed, and the plant forms a deep taproot. Flowering occurs in springtime, typically between the months of March and May in its native range. |
Taraxacum officinale (Dandelion, Common Dandelion) This species is well-known worldwide as a weedy plant that colonizes lawns, disturbed soils, and gardens worldwide. Plants form deep taproots and are difficult to eradicate from landscapes, but have the upside of being edible. Flowers are used to make dandelion wine and as garnish, leaves are used in salads as greens or sauteed, and roots are ground and used as a coffee substitute. |
