Andropogon gerardii
( ??? )
At-A-Glance InformationAlso called Big Bluestem and Turkeyfoot, this perennial grass needs full sun or light shade, and little to regular water. This classic prairie grass can reach 8 feet high, but in drier climates is more likely to reach 3-5 feet tall. Thin blades are blue-green in summer and turn bronzey red or copper in fall. Flowers aren't showy, but they are interesting. They form on spikes that are purple-tinted and arranged in sets of three or more. Makes an effective screen when massed and given regular water. It can also grow singly in a mixed border planting.
