China has a rich gardening history, beginning in the area of the Yellow River during the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC). Original gardens in this country were either large, enclosed parks where the royalty could hunt wild game or areas of crop cultivation. There were three Chinese characters representing the word 'garden' during this time: You (a royal garden where exotic birds and animals were kept), Pu (a garden for plants), and Yuan (a character referring to gardens in general). A famous royal garden of the late Shang Dynasty was the Terrace, Pond and Park of the Spirit. Another historical Chinese garden is Shaqui, the Dunes of Sand, at which there was a large central raised terrace surrounded by garden grounds that included a pool filled with wine with a central island, on which trees were planted. On these trees, skewers of cooked meat were hung, so that royalty could float around with their concubines and pick tasty snacks off of the branches above them. In 505 BC, ground was broken on a brand new garden, the Terrace of Gusu. This garden was located in the side of a mountain, and included a series of connected terraces as well as a lake. Currently, the most famous gardens in China include:
China National Botanical Garden, Beijing
Created in 1956 and covering about 1,500 acres of land, this massive garden is divided into North and South areas. It is located between Fragrant Hills Park and Jade Spring Hill in the Western Hills of the capital city, Beijing. The South area is run by the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and is a research-driven project site that is used in the development of technologies to investigate biodiversity, plant science, and conservation. The North is referred to as the Beijing Botanical Garden, and focuses on collection and exhibition of plants, conservation of plant species, and research and training on horticultural topics. The park includes 6,000 unique plantings, and the main attraction is 'Hot House' with a variety of unique plant collections. The Specimen Hall houses specimens, research areas, and classification labs, and the Peony Garden (a 1,100,000 square-foot area opened in 1981) features a beautiful grove of many peony species.
