Sometimes known under the name Cylindrophyllum 'Red Spike', these succulent perennials grow best in full sun to partial shade, and need moderate to regular waterings for best performance. The flowers will attract bees to your garden, and they are native to South Africa. These plants grow best in zones 8, 9 and 11-24 (to find your zone, click here: Zone Map). It reaches 3-5 inches tall and has a spreading habit to 15-18 inches wide. Leaves are green to bronze in color, and point straight upwards. Blooms pop in winter or early spring, and can be somewhat sporadic in the off-seasons. This plant is great when used as a groundcover.

Caring for Cephalophyllum 'Red Spike'
Plant these flowering succulents about 6-12 inches apart for best coverage if you are using it for a groundcover. During the growth and blooming periods, these plants will need more supplemental water than they do in their off-seasons (cut back water in summertime). They will need afternoon shade in desert areas to avoid getting burned.
