Dolichos Species and Varietals
The best zones for growing Dolichos varies depending on the species. For more information, see the descriptions below. To find your zone, click here: Zone Map.
Dolichos lablab (Lablab purpureus) (Hyacinth Bean) This vine is a perennial, though it is often grown as an annual and can be planted successfully in all zones. It reaches 10 feet tall and produces sweet-pea shaped flowers in purple or white. These vines are great for screening purposes, and need great drainage. Variety 'Ruby Moon' has dark green leaves that are purple underneath. Flowers fade and are replaced by long seed pods. |
Dolichos lignosus (Dipogon lignosus) (Australian Pea Vine) This vine grows best in zones 16, 17, 21-24 and H2. This is a somewhat woody species of vine that grows to 10 feet or larger, and produces rose-purple flowers in clusters. It is evergreen in zones where winters are mild. Can be great for trellises or for screening. Grow from seed. |
