Equisetum hyemale
( ??? )
At-A-Glance Information
Commonly called Horsetail, this perennial species of rush-like plant needs full sun to partial shade, and does well in marshy areas or near pools of water. These plants grow well in zones 1-24 (to find your zone, click here: Zone Map). Horsetail is native to Europe and North America, and produces whorls of green stems that branch out from the main ones. There are several notable species in the genus Equisetum, though Equisetum hyemale is the most commonly grown. Stems reach 4 feet tall and are bright green with dark grey joints and conelike spikes at stem ends. Species Equisetum scirpoides is a dwarf variety that reaches just 6-8 inches tall.
