Ginkgo Biloba
( GIN - koh bill - OH - buh )
At-A-Glance InformationCommonly called Maidenhair Tree, this species of deciduous trees needs full sun and moderate to regular water. These trees are native to China, and are attractive year-round, especially in fall when foliage turns golden-yellow. Leaves are fan-shaped, resembling Maidenhair Ferns. They can reach 70-100 feet tall, but in gardens commonly top out around 30-35 feet. They are great street and lawn trees, and are long-lived. Plant male trees instead of female trees if possible; female trees are messy and fruit produces a rancid smell.

Caring for and pruning ginkgo biloba Trees
Plant these trees in loose, well-draining soil. Water regularly until trees reach a height of 20 feet, and then irrigate occasionally. Prune any awkward branches on young trees back, as well as any parallel shoots, choosing one main 'leader' shoot to grow. Older trees need minimal pruning; simply remove dead or dying branches.
