This species of evergreen trees needs full sun and moderate water, and are commonly called Catalina Ironwood. They are native to the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. Leaves have scalloped edges The species is rarely seen, but its varietal, Lyonothamnus floribundus asplenifolius (Fernleaf Catalina Ironwood). This tree reaches 20-35 feet tall and 15 feet wide, has red-brown bark that peels off in strips, and deep green leaves with gray undersides. This tree blooms in late spring to early summertime.
