Macleaya
( mak - LAY - uh )
At-A-Glance InformationCommonly called Plume Poppy, this genus of flowering perennials requires light shade in warm climates and regular water. They are tall plants native to China and Japan that produce spikes of tassle-like flowers. They spread by underground rhizomes and have a tropical look to them, valued for their size and structure. They can be invasive if not controlled. Take care when planting these in the landscape, as plant parts are toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
