Physalis alkekengi
( FYE - sal - iss )
At-A-Glance InformationThis species of perennial flowering plant, known commonly as Chinese Lantern Plant, needs full sun to light shade and regular water. Take care when planting this interesting species in your garden, as leaves and unripe berries are poisonous to humans and animals. This species is native to Europe and Asia, and is not necessarily grown for its flowers. After blooms have faded, berries appear and are surrounded by decorative calyxes that mature to a reddish orange in fall. The dried calyxes around colorful berries are great additions to holiday flower arrangements. Variety P. a. franchetii 'Zwerg' is a great choice for container plantings; it reaches just 8 inches tall. Physalis alkekengi grows best in zones 1-24 (To find your zone, click here: Zone Map).
