At-A-Glance Information
This species of flowering perennial grows from rhizome and is commonly called Crimson Flag, a reference to its red flowers. It is native to South Africa, and needs full sun to light shade and regular to ample waterings for best performance and bloom. Crimson Flag has sword-like leaves and star-shaped flowers that are excellent in fresh arrangements. Varieties include 'Alba' (with white flowers), 'Oregon Sunset' (with watermelon red flowers), 'Sunrise' (pink flowers) and 'Viscountess Byng' (also with pink blooms). Crimson Flag grows well in zones 5-9 and 14-24 as well as H1 and H2. To find your zone, click here: Zone Map.

Caring for schizostylis coccinea
Place rhizomes a foot apart and 0.5-1 inch deep in organically enriched well-draining soil. Water generously throughout the growing and blooming season, and then lessen water as the plant enters dormancy. Clumps can become overcrowded; if this occurs, divide them in early springtime, leaving at least five shoots on each division. Grow in pots in areas where winters are cold.
