Sollya heterophylla
(Pro - nun - see - ashun )
At-A-Glance Information
Also known under the botanical name Sollya fusiformis, and under the common name Australian Bluebell Creeper, this evergreen shrub or vine needs partial shade in warmer climates and moderate to regular water for best performance. It forms a loose, spreading shrub (2-3 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide) that can climb up to 6-8 feet when given appropriate support. It is native to Australia and has glossy green foliage and loose clusters of bell-shaped light blue flowers in summertime. These shrubby vines are great as a groundcover, in borders and in containers. Varieties include 'Alba' (with white flowers), 'Rosea' (with pink flowers), and S. h. parviflora (with a more vining habit than the species; smaller flowers bloom in dark blue). These grow best in zones 8, 9, 14-24, H1 and H2 (to find your zone, click here: Zone Map).
