Woodwardia fimbriata (Giant Chain Fern) This species grows well in zones 2b-9 and 14-24 and is native to Mexico up through British Columbia. These ferns can reach 9 feet tall and a little less wide. In gardens, they are usually seen more around 4-5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Fronds are green, and somewhat coarse. Great along streams or brooks, against shaded walls, or in woodland gardens. These are fast growing, vigorous ferns but are not considered to be invasive. |
Woodwardia orientalis (Oriental Chain Fern) This species does well in zones 5-9 and 14-24, and is native to the Himalayas, China and Japan. Fronds are green and reach between 3 and 5 feet long, and new growth is red-orange. Plantlets form on mature fronds, causing them to look a bit ruffled. These plantlets will root where they touch soil, and are easily propagated. |
