Ophiopogon
( ??? )
At-A-Glance InformationNative to Asia, these grasslike plants are closely related to Liriope and are very easy to grow. They can serve as informal groundcover in small areas, and are attractive when planted in masse. They can also do great in containers. Although they require moderate to regular amounts of water, they are considered otherwise easy to care for, and produce flowers in summertime on short spikes (though flowers are normally hidden by leaves).

Nassella Species and Varietals
Ophiopogon jaburan (Giant Lily Turf) This plant is sometimes sold under the name Liriope gigantea, and reaches 2-3 feet tall and a foot wide. Leaves are dark green and flowers are small and white. Blooms are followed by metallic blue fruits that are attractive in cut flower arrangements. Variety 'Vittatus' (pictured) has leaves edged in creamy white. This species is best in partial to full shade. |
Ophiopogon japonicus (Mondo Grass) This species forms a 6-8 inch tall clump of foliage that sprads via underground stems. It is slow to establish as a groundcover, but produces light lilac flowers on short spikes. Leaves are dark green and fruits are blue. Can be mown or sheared. Varieties include 'Kyoto Dwarf' (half the size of the species), 'Nana' (also half the size of the species), and 'Kigimafukiduma' (also called 'Silver Mist', with leaves variegated with white). |
Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' ('Arabicus', 'Ebony Knight') (Black Mondo Grass) This species of Mondo Grass has new foliage that emerges green, but eventually matures to nearly black. It reaches 8 inches tall and a foot wide. Not a great groundcover, but good for adding accent color to borders, beds, and containers. Flowers are white or flushed purple. |
